A Preface That Will Unfortunately Appear After the Entry it is Prefacing
Which I guess would technically make this a postface. Yeesh. Before I start this list, I'd just like to say a few things:
1. I'm making this list moreso for you guys than myself; the weighting on this is probably 60/40, but still. It's in your favor. I love making lists, I love music, but I also love sharing the stuff I like with people, mainly in a desperate attempt to get them to like the same stuff as me.
2. There's so much good music out there. Whenever people say to me "Man, music is really going down the drain..." I just want to shout from the mountaintops "Nay, hope is not yet lost!" Because, truth be told, there are tons of good albums and artists that might have "fallen through the cracks" with most people, myself included. Just it's not popular or you're not hearing it on the radio doesn't mean that there's no good music being made. This list is here to hopefully introduce people to new artists/albums.
3. The list is far from definitive, I'm afraid. I'm just a guy that likes to listen to music and make lists. Nothing more. So please, keep that fact in mind at all times whenever you think "OMG, HOW COULD HE RANK A U2 SONG SO EFFING HIGH?!?!?!" I can't make my own music and can't even begin to tell you how some of these guys make theirs (especially knob-turners like Animal Collective). All I go by is what sounds good to my little ears. And I'm not lying about my ears being little.
4. While I like to pretend that I have a broad and eclectic taste in music, the truth is that I suffer from the same disease that ails many music-listeners: I let my personal biases and preconceived notions oftentimes dictate what I will and will not listen to. You'll see this in flying colors on my list, which favors rock (namely indie rock), folk, and electronic music with some dabblings in hip-hop. What you will see is a major lack of jazz, world, metal, country, and all sorts of other music artists. Rap is also under-represented, but not absent altogether like some of the aforementioned categories. So, in essence, this list is far from perfect and I'm sure I'll be revising it in the years to come. I fail.
5. Favorite artists of mine will make the list more than once.
Another example of my inability to broaden my horizons could perhaps be blamed on the number of songs by my favorite artists making the list (several of them have at least a couple of tracks on this list; Arcade Fire has the most at four).
6. I'll be listing off in descending order 10 picks from my Favorite Songs of the Decade list for the next ten weeks or so. Keep in mind that these are merely my favorites and the rankings can be viewed as arbitrary, for as the list went on it became increasingly more difficult for me to rank one song over the other, especially when it came down to the wire.
7. For each song I'll do a little write-up on why I picked it, as well as include a youtube link that lets you listen to the track if you're curious.
8. My ten picks will be released every Tuesday for the next ten weeks. After that, I'll probably do my albums list.
9. My criteria for choosing songs mainly revolved around how much I enjoyed the song or how much it meant to me on a personal level, although I also took cultural impact/significance into consideration at times.
